Palin On Leno, and Adam Lambert
So we have yet another distortion of Gov Sarah Palin in the media, and just when we were all getting along. The LA Times reviewed the Jay Leno show which had Olympian Shawn White, Gov Palin and Adam Lambert all appearing the same night. (For the record, I'm a huge Lambert fan). The paper said that Palin and Lambert, the American Idol runner up and an openly gay male, didn't meet up afterwards as "neither camp was interested", then sniffed that it was likely due to her "strong opposition to gay marriage."
Excuse me, but were we watching the same debates in the election? I recall that she, Biden and Obama, all had the exact same position on gay marriage. All of the candidates said they believe marriage is for one man and one woman, all three oppose discrimination against gays, and all three support states using legal civil unions. Gee, what a bunch of right wing nuts they all must be.
Yes, I sometimes wish Gov Palin would use a less folksy speaking style. But that's her, and at least she's not boring. She embraces an optimistic vision of our country and our people. Gov Palin doesn't denigrate those with different views. She showed her sense of humor on the show with great delivery of fairly good material, and her relaxed, "live and let live" outlook was demonstrated again.
I can't tell if the LA Times is simply superficial in their assessments and research, or if they're intentionally distorting her record, again. But it's designed to damage Palin. And that's a shame.
Other than that, the show was a great success for me and I, being the groovy tolerant woman that I am, enjoyed seeing all the guests.

There was a similar thing with the Washington Post after a small group (about 50) from all sorts or grass roots organizations (no, not Tea Parties only) met with Mike Steele at the Congressional Club in DC. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/16/AR2010021605516.html?hpid=topnews
ReplyDeleteMilbank and all other media were not invited to participate in the meting. Yes, they did have to stay outside in the cold. I think that is part of their job if they want the big story! Milbank made some comments that were not true, actual lies but we aren't supposed to use words like that today, it might be too harsh!
Milbank: "But Republican leaders, probably wary of TV footage showing a tea party takeover of RNC headquarters, denied the activists' request to use the facility for the news conference they had planned for afterward."
The real story: Not one person in that room with me asked to use the facility for any kind of news conference. What we did agree on is that we (the group) wanted it to be an off the record private meeting, though one crazy lady decided to record it and put it on youtube before I got home.
Milbank: "The tea partiers were out in the cold -- 21 degrees with the wind chill, to be exact. They held their news conference, sans Steele, on the sidewalk across from the Capitol South Metro entrance."
The real story: No one but Lisa Miller actually wanted to run down to stand in the cold to be interviewed. Most interviews were done as people were leaving and the news crews were asking, begging for something. I walked to the metro and from the metro to my truck in the garage at the Vienna stop, not once did I shiver!
Milbank: "Heard, but not seen. By the time they emerged, just before 8 p.m., they had missed any chance of having their visit to the RNC on the network newscasts. That probably didn't disappoint Chairman Steele one bit."
The real story: The meeting started at 4:00 and was to last for one hour. After Mike Steele went around the room and greeted each person personally with a firm handshake, not hurried, he gave a brief statement, then opened it up to anyone who had something to say. As it approached 5:00 Mike Steele told us that the meeting wouldn't end until each person got their say. No, not avoiding the 6:00 news, to hell with the 6:00 news! That wasn't why we were there. We were there to be heard, he was there to listen and from seeing some of the events since that meeting, Mike Steele heard us loud and clear!
